Everyone is talking about CBD, but how well do you know cannabidiol? Are there gaps in your knowledge or do you have specific questions about CBD and are you looking for reliable answers? You will certainly find what you are looking for in our online compendium. Below we explain everything you need to know about CBD! From the history of the hemp plant to the various CBD oils (and other CBD products) to the correct dosage of the “green gold”.

What is CBD anyway?

The abbreviation “CBD” stands for cannabidiol. It is a naturally occurring chemical compound from the resinous flower of the cannabis plant (hemp). While the hemp plant has been used as a medicine for thousands of years, the therapeutic properties of CBD are now being tested and (at least partially) confirmed by scientists and doctors around the world. As a safe and non-addictive substance, CBD is one of more than a hundred “phytocannabinoids” that make cannabis so unique – and give the plant its robust therapeutic profile.

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of over 80 in this context

CBD is closely related to other important phytocannabinoid: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is primarily known around the world because it causes a feeling of intoxication – THC is known all over the world as “weed”, “weed” or “ganja”. THC and CBD are the two components of cannabis that are the most scientifically studied. Even so, research into CBD is still in its infancy.

So what is the difference between CBD and THC? Both have significant therapeutic properties, but unlike THC, CBD is never psychoactive. So when you consume CBD, you will not experience a “high” feeling. This is because CBD and THC, although they have in common, act differently on receptors in the human body. Many people want the health benefits of cannabis without the intoxication – that’s exactly what is possible with CBD.

Can CBD be classified as cannabis?

In colloquial terms, cannabis is often associated with the drug of the same name, which is illegal in large parts of the world. The name cannabis, on the other hand, formally refers to the genus of the hemp plant. The industrial hemp and marijuana come from the same plant, Cannabis Sativa, but are completely different. Until a few years ago, the best-known active ingredient in the female cannabis plant, delta-9, was tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In this context, cannabis contains several cannabinoids, including CBD and THC, only the effect is different. THC is known to get “high”. On the other hand, CBD is not psychoactive. This means that CBD has no intoxicating effects when consumed.

Over the years, marijuana farmers have selectively bred their cannabis plants to achieve high levels of THC and breed different strains. On the other hand, normal (legal) hemp farmers have not modified their plant and continue to produce thousands of products that are derived from industrial hemp and are used every day. The legal cannabinoid is extracted from these hemp plants, which in the EU may have a maximum THC content of 0.2%. CBD can therefore by no means be classified as marijuana.
